The Bleeding Art Tissue Crate

Paper was invented in China nearly two thousand years ago. The Chinese made thin paper from mulberry bark and used it in many of the same ways we use tissue paper today. Tissue paper as we know it was first invented in the late 1800s. The Kimberly-Clark Company sold it to the US government during World War 1 for use as bandages and as filters in gas masks. After the war, they looked for a new market and created facial tissues, toilet paper, decorative crepe paper, gift wrapping, and more to use this soft, lightweight paper.

One particular artist changed the way that we use tissue paper in art. Maya Freelon Asante lived with her grandmother while she attended art school in Boston. One day, she discovered a batch of tissue paper that had been damaged by water in her grandmother’s basement. She was intrigued by the way the colors bled together, and was inspired to use those bleeding colors in her art. At the time, she had to find tissue paper which would bleed colors when wetted, but we have done the guesswork and experimentation for you and provide you with bleeding art tissue which is specially made for just this purpose.
