Description
Mosaic is the art of arranging small pieces of glass, ceramic tiles, or stones to make a
pattern or create an image. Mosaics are some of the earliest known and most persistent
artworks we have. The columns of a temple in Mesopotamia thought to be 4000 years old
have mosaics. The Greeks and Romans used mosaics in their baths, wealthy homes, and
temples.
By the time of the Byzantine Empire in the 400s and 500s AD, Christian churches were
employing mosaics in their decor and mosaic art reached a high point. During this time, the
tesserae (the small pieces of tile, stone, or glass) were placed at an angle to reflect as much
light as possible, creating the beautiful mosaics that can still be seen in modern day
Istanbul. Saints’ halos were made to glow in this way. Later, Islamic buildings incorporated
geometric designs. Mosaics were also made by the Mayans and Aztecs in Mesoamerica,
sometimes with precious turquoise as tesserae.
Mosaics are still being produced as fine art and decorations. You’ve probably seen modern
mosaics in homes made of ceramic tiles and as public art in rail stations, museums, and on
buildings. You’ll be creating your own mosaics with this crate!
