Description

When artist David Alfaro Siqueiros first developed his “accidental painting” technique in the 1930s, he was amazed by the complex way the paints worked in coming together or flowing into one another. He noticed that the effect was very different when he poured white, a denser paint, onto black, a less dense paint, than when he did the opposite. He invited scientists to his studio to help him understand. What seems to be just simple art depends on how dense and sticky each paint is. If you think of the differences between orange juice and maple syrup, you’ll get an idea of how different liquids move, slowly or quickly.

Scientists call the study of how liquids interact fluid dynamics. Fluids is another name for things that flow, like liquids and gases. Fluid dynamics explains things as different as the way supernovas look, how your car’s brakes work, and what it looks like when you put cream in coffee! As you paint, you’ll use those interactions to create spots and swirls in your art to make it more interesting
