Description

How does the science of fluid dynamics get associated with artwork? In the 1930s, a Mexican realist painter by the name of David Alfaro Siqueiros developed what he called his “Accidental Painting” technique. In his studio he was fascinated by the complexities and interactions of his paints in coalescing, or coming together, and infiltrating, or flowing into, one another. He noticed when he poured paints with different densities on top of each other in various patterns and orders it created remarkable effects. Siqueiros invited scientists to his studio to help him understand the effects, which led to unveiling how a simple art technique unveils the complexity of the world of density, viscosity, and the interplay of color.

Density is the concentration of particles in a volume, in this case pigment particles. Viscosity is how resistant to flow a substance is – whether or not it flows easily or slowly, like the difference between orange juice (low viscosity) and maple syrup (high viscosity).

It has only been relatively recently that this interaction of substances with different densities has been described in the field of Fluid Dynamics, the science of the flow of fluids, as Rayleigh-Taylor Instabilities, the same interactions that astrophysicists see in the way supernovas, or exploding stars, expel different gases. You can see this effect in the swirls of cream poured into coffee, or in the mesmerizing bubbling of a lava lamp. Engineers rely on these same instabilities in fracking oil. In fact, scientific papers have been published on the mathmatical relationships involved in paints of different viscosities and densities forming the spots, swirls, and Rayleigh-Taylor Instabilities that produce a pleasing painting.
