The Miniature Book Binding Crate
Growing up, one of the Christmas ornaments that our kids always searched for first to put on our tree was a tiny book ornament. This miniature book was a tiny book of fairy tales, but with every element of a high end hardback book but only a couple inches square in size. So when we announced this crate to our own kids, they were absolutely thrilled and clamored for a chance to be the one to demo the crate for the family.
This crate combines the art of bookbinding, in the form of miniature books, and the art of collage.
The word collage comes from the French word Coller, meaning to glue. But the first recorded example of artists using bits of glued paper to form art was in Japan in the 900s when calligraphy artists used it to decorate the paper that they drew poems on. We included washi origami paper like they might have used.
Bookbinding began in ancient times with scribes sewing together papyrus or parchment to make scrolls, which were wound up in a roll on wooden spindles. During the Roman Empire nearly 2000 years ago, people began sewing folded papyrus and parchment between thin wooden boards into a type of handwritten book called a codex. (If you have more than one codex, they are called codices.) Now days, books are divided into smaller bundles of pages to sew together, and each portion is called a signature. Only custom bound books are still sewn today, most are glued, but hand bound books are a very real way of experiencing an important part of history
