Craftsman Crate: The Metal Relief Crate

Description

The history of metal relief, called chasing or embossing, is a long and storied one. Have you seen the mask of Tutankamen? That’s a spectacular example, but metal relief work has been used throughout history. Chasing or embossing involves pressing or hammering on the top of a thin metal sheet to lower some portions, often onto a mold, while repoussee’ involves pressing or hammering on the back of the metal sheet, raising some parts. Metal relief work allows the beauty of metal without the weight or expense of solid metal.

We are particularly excited about this crate because one of our founders, Hal Young, has happy memories of using the exact large mold pattern you will be using to create a metal relief many years ago. We hope you’ll enjoy doing metal relief as much as he did.
