Description

Bas relief comes from the Italian basso relievo, meaning low relief, and is pronounced bah-ree-leef. It refers to plaster work or sculpture that is just barely above the background. Bas relief is an ancient art. We see it in ancient Egyptian pyramids, in the friezes on the Parthenon, at Angkor Wat in Cambodia, on the Greek Elgin Marbles, and the Lion Capital of Ashoka in India. During the Renaissance, Donatello and Michaelangelo sculpted in high relief with low relief behind to suggest perspective. In more modern times, bas relief has been used on monuments like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., as well as in Art Deco design.

Introduction to Bas Relief in Plaster

The art of plaster bas relief is to create a design that is in between 2-D and 3-D. It’s a cross between painting and sculpting and is an excellent, low-stress way to try your hand at sculpting. In some periods of history, bas relief was painted, which is called relief painting, but the vast majority is left white in modern times. You have probably seen bas relief on government buildings or in museums.
